First time in Dubai and not sure where to start? These are the five places almost every visitor puts at the top of their list, with a few practical tips from our team so you can plan your days better.
1. Burj Khalifa
The world’s tallest building is the obvious first stop. The observation decks on levels 124 and 125 give you a 360° view over the city, the desert and the Gulf. Book a time slot in advance, especially for sunset, as it sells out fast. Read our full Burj Khalifa guide for tickets, timings and tips.
2. The Dubai Mall and Dubai Fountain
Right next to Burj Khalifa, The Dubai Mall is much more than shopping: you’ll find the Dubai Aquarium, an ice rink and hundreds of restaurants. In the evening, step outside for the Dubai Fountain show on Burj Lake. It is free to watch and runs every 30 minutes after sunset.
3. Desert Safari
No Dubai trip is complete without a few hours in the desert. A typical evening desert safari includes dune bashing in a 4×4, sandboarding, a camel ride, a sunset photo stop and a BBQ dinner with live shows at a desert camp. Hotel pick-up and drop-off are usually included. See our UAE attractions and tours to book.
4. Dubai Marina and JBR Beach
For a more relaxed day, head to Dubai Marina. Walk along the Marina promenade, take a dhow or yacht cruise between the skyscrapers, then spend the afternoon at JBR Beach. In the evening, The Walk at JBR is full of cafes and restaurants. Ask us about cruise options too.
5. Old Dubai: Al Fahidi, Dubai Creek and the Souks
To see where the city began, visit the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood with its wind-tower houses and small museums. Cross Dubai Creek on a traditional abra boat for just a few dirhams, then explore the Gold Souk and Spice Souk in Deira. Bargaining is expected, so have fun with it.
Tips for planning your visit
- Best time to visit: November to March, when the weather is pleasant for outdoor activities.
- Getting around: The Dubai Metro connects Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, the Marina and Old Dubai. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are easy to use.
- Dress code: Light, modest clothing is best for souks, mosques and heritage areas.
- Book ahead: Popular slots for Burj Khalifa and desert safaris fill up quickly in peak season.
